Overview

An experience not to be missed! Hike along the rugged terrain of the Samaria Gorge cutting through a limestone plateau and at a length of 18 kilometres it is Europe’s longest gorge. You will visit and will surely be enchanted by the beautiful landscapes of Crete. At one point of the gorge the walls are only 3 metres apart from each other, and are known as the ’iron gates’ with sides rising sheer up to 100 feet.

One of the most famous places to see on Crete is the Samaria Gorge, Europe’s largest gorge.  The gorge is rich with many endemic flowers & herbs with crystal clear spring water flowing from the mountains. – You can even refill your water bottles with it (at specific points).

The average walking time through the Samaria gorge is 4-6 hours & is on a foot path with rocks & along the river bed. It is mostly downhill. Starting at 1,250m height amongst the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) the path winds down the mountain & into the depth of the gorge, to the narrowest point which is 3m wide!

The guide on the trip will give you information on the coach & you are free to walk at your own pace. The guide follows the group to ensure everyone comes out of the gorge.

The hike ends in a beautiful coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where you will have the opportunity for lunch break in one of the local traditional tavernas or have a swim in the Libyan Sea before you will take the boat which will bring you to Chora Sfakion where will be your return bus.
